What Is Tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide is a first-in-class dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist — a 39-amino-acid modified peptide that simultaneously activates two incretin receptors. Developed by Eli Lilly, it received FDA approval in 2022 as Mounjaro® for type 2 diabetes and in 2023 as Zepbound® for weight management [1].
Why Researchers Study It
Unlike single-target GLP-1 agonists (semaglutide), tirzepatide’s dual mechanism produces synergistic metabolic effects. GLP-1 activation stimulates insulin secretion and suppresses glucagon. GIP activation enhances insulin sensitivity and influences energy metabolism.
Key Clinical Trial Data
- SURPASS-2: Superior A1C reduction vs. semaglutide in head-to-head comparison (Frías et al., 2021, NEJM) [1]
- SURMOUNT-1: 22.5% mean weight reduction at 72 weeks — the largest seen in any obesity drug trial at the time (Jastreboff et al., 2022, NEJM) [2]
- Phase 3 trials ongoing for MASH, heart failure, and obstructive sleep apnea
Research-Grade vs. Pharmaceutical-Grade
Research-grade tirzepatide is synthesized for in-vitro binding assays and cell culture studies. It is not equivalent to pharmaceutical Mounjaro/Zepbound, which undergoes GMP manufacturing controls. Research-grade material should only be used in laboratory settings.
What to Look for When Sourcing
- Purity ≥98% with HPLC verification
- Batch-specific COA with mass spec data
- Proper cold-chain shipping (peptides degrade in heat)
- Vendor compliance with research-only labeling
MedTides offers research-grade tirzepatide at $85 for 20mg with ≥98% purity and third-party COAs available on request.
